17 States Move Closer Toward Pay Per Mile Road Tax – Here’s a List of the States

State governments are turning to various forms of taxation, such as new taxes on gasoline and cigarettes, increased property tax rates, and “sin” taxes on products or services considered unhealthy or undesirable, in order to raise revenue. They have also adopted income tax increases to fund government programs and services.

Additionally, state and federal governments are looking at new ways to fund transportation, such as mileage-based user fees, vehicle miles traveled fees, road user charges, or highway use fees, which would involve drivers paying a tax for each mile traveled. This is causing frustration among drivers, as they feel taxed enough already and have concerns about privacy with mileage tracking.

The Eastern Transportation Coalition, a partnership of 17 states and Washington D.C., is one organization that has spoken up on this issue in order to create greater safety and efficiency for all modes of transportation. Member states in the coalition include Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia.

Unfortunately, the traditional gas tax revenues are declining due to inflation since 1993 and this is causing some serious concerns about how transportation systems will be funded going forward – especially when it comes to fuel-efficient vehicles getting 25 miles per gallon or more who are now required to pay an additional fee in certain states such as Virginia and Utah. In fact, in Oregon it’s even worse with registration fees based on fuel efficiency so that those driving more efficient vehicles have to pay higher rates than those with less efficient ones.

It’s hard not to feel frustrated by these taxes as they don’t give us much choice; drivers must pay them no matter what their opinion may be. Studies conducted by the Eastern Transportation Coalition have found that drivers initially express worry about privacy when it comes to mileage tracking, but these fears tend to decrease over time once they become involved in the program.

These kinds of fees can be difficult conversations as everyone likes using their transportation, but nobody wants to have to pay for it. It’s also understandable why many people would be resistant due to concerns about privacy as well as an aversion to paying taxes altogether. Even if third parties were implemented instead of government control, there would still remain worries about personal data being compromised which could lead to further conflicts down the line.

WE ARE TAXED TO DEATH NOW!!! Here’s a novel idea, CUT YOUR SPENDING!! OR ALL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TAKE A 20% PAY CUT& STOP TAKING YOUR JET &AUNTERAGE EVERYWHERE YOU GO!!! We the people are tired of paying for your playing!!!!

Gerald Ladd

Never going to happen. Politicians love wasting other people’s money.

PatrioTEA

That’s their job, so they think.

Ken

They think??? Since when?

Mike, great work. I applaud your efforts enormously because I presently make more than $36,000 each month from just one straightforward online company! You may begin creating a steady online income with as little as $29,000, and these are only the most basic internet operations jobs. Alternate the

Their real job is to personally get as rich as possible. People want to be politicians for power and for money.

Don Rozino

Everything they promote is nothing but a money laundering scheme that puts a cut back in their coffers.

gregory lee cruz

Isn’t it amazing how a person making 174k a year in Congress becomes a millionaire overnight almost?

seamus

Their privilege !

ahem tonto

It is a good thing the colonials didn’t feel that helpless or we would still be a British colony.

MikeL

I remember a talk show host Jay Severin saying 1/3 of colonists wanted to revolt, 1/3 wanted to remain British subjects, 1/3 didn’t care one way or another.

Bren

We care.

Bren

Are you saying it’s time we act?

MojoPatriot

God knows it can’t get much worse before the whole thing falls apart. Maybe yes?

seamus

Could be?

Zelda

Part of which is raising their own salaries.

john

John Kerry recently said that if people didn’t go along with global warming that they would be taxed.

Patricia Overbey

you know what Kerry can do with this tax.

john

Yeah, put it in his bank account or friend’s accounts. It sure won;t go back to us in any form except more taxes!

william perry

John Kerry has no business talking about taxes. He is not an elected official therefore he has Zero say in the matter. Fact is when he was an elected Senator he was a tax and spend liberal. I remember when he bought a Million dollar yacht from Asian company and registered it in Rhode Island to avoid paying taxes in Taxachusetts(MA) his home state.

Paul

my question is how much tax dollars is Johnny paid to pollute the plantet.

Dan F.

There are more and more scientists who disagree with the whole climate change theory, but they are being shouted down because this is a “cash cow” for so many more. None of the contrary info is making it to the internet……like the 1800 year old sequoia tree that had no evidence of long term climate change over its 1800 year life after a forrest fire. The study on this tree has been pulled from the internet !!!

seamus

They are growing cajones, finally.

Rae

Mother nature runs in cycles, always has always will. We have dinosaurs and the Ice age to provide facts of change. When you have gross polluters, like India and China there is no way the US can manage to even make a drop in the bucket to improve the world situation. You and I can do a little but never enough. Banning gas vehicles and gas stoves does nothing when you don’t have the infrastructure to support the alternative you’re proposing. It’s all about control, always more, never less!

If Kerry wantsto cut down on air polution he should endevor to just quip breathing (forever).

Patricia Overbey

Amen stop sending all the money to other Countries [who hate the USA] get the USA legal citizens the break they need. God help us.

john

But if we send money won’t they like us more?

bob woods

take all their credit cards funded by we the people=====

MikeL

Sorry, you have no “standing” in this matter. Once legislators are elected and Congress is in session they have total power over the federal “purse”.

Magik

All you need for ” standing ” is a good Sheriff and Governor .

john

Government officials wouldn’t be harmed financially if they took a 20% pay cut but, they would be harmed if they could no longer do a bit of insider trading or couldn’t take campaign money for personal use. They are so corrupt that if they didn’t take any pay they’d still fight to keep their lucrative positions because they make more money from all the insider trading, money from foreign governments, lobbyists as well as campaign money.

william perry

So true, their salaries is just a small amount of what they can earn just being there. In New Hampshire they do not get paid and come election time there is never a shortage of candidates and they have the highest number of politicians per capita among all the states and it works well, along with the fact there is no income or sales tax.

Ron

ABSOULTY!

DanC

I know how to fix the problem, it’s just not legal……

Jacqueline H McCarty

I AGREE!!!!

Bob

Reduce government, fire them and make government as small as a dot in every state, not limited to the federal government and keep it that way no more career politicians!

This will reduce the taxation 80% or better.

Chuckles47

get rid of their retirement and put them on social insecurity.

IF we didn’t have to pay their private retirement then WE, THE TAXPAYERS could fund our own retirement as well!

Grandpa

I’ll tax the street
(If you try to sit, sit) I’ll tax your seat
(If you get too cold, cold) I’ll tax the heat
(If you take a walk, walk) I’ll tax your feet

‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman.
__George Harrison

Siekierski

These imbecile politicians are out of their minds. Tax them, cut their salaries and let them see how it is trying to survive. Here is another suggestion, a national poop tax. We will be taxed each time we poop based upon the amount of poop we create. No one will be exempt, even infants. This will be a WIN-WIN situation because not only will it generate tax revenue but will also force people to cut back in the amount they eat. Eat less, poop less, pay less tax… Amazing.

Sandra Smith

Trouble is , THEY decide their salaries, not “we the people”! We just get to foot the bill.

Stephen A Davis

That can be changed. Use the power of the vote, the power of the voice, let them know that change must be accomplished!

vnvet

Read my last post about Mc Cain and how he kept getting elected election, after election, after election and yet hundereds+ voters were always complaining about the type of work he did or did not do? So, my question is,”WHY” did the voters keep electing him, if he was so bad??????

bob woods

one word ——rigged

Josette

I have talked to numerous voters in Kentucky and asked WHY they kept electing McConnell. Every one of them said that not only did they NEVER vote for McConnell but no one that they know ever voted for McConnell and they are always asking each other – How did McConnell get elected? Probably the same way that biden became prez – corrupt people, corrupt practices and corrupt machines.

Kevin

HE WAS NEVER ELECTED !!
JUST ANOTHER DEEPSTATE CROOK!
And we all say RIGGED.

Sandra Smith

Who says we did???

cliff

Stephen,
How can you do THAT, when the “elections” have been proven to be RIGGED and STOLEN to favor corrupt DEMOCOMMUNISTS that LOVE to tax and spend?

MikeL

Voice means nothing. Replacing spendthrift legislators at election is your only hope – and not a certainty.

Bren

But we know they cheat.

Kevin

None of it is

Sandra Smith

How, exactly do you propose to achieve that? We have no vote on their salaries.

bob woods

they also vote for their own term limits which should be we the people not corrupt congress

MikeL

Why would legislators vote to end their gravy train Congressional careers? Answer: They wouldn’t.

john

Let them have their salaries and nothing else and see who remains in congress! They make more by corruption that they receive in salaries.

vnvet

Some may take that as a joke, but it would not surprise me in the least in the government were not to try it in some form or other.

James Sharkey

I seem to remember a revolution that was fought mostly over unfair taxes.

PatrioTEA

Rerun is in order.

They don’t even teach that in schools anymore .

R E V O L U T I O N ! !

yankg jackson

Just this morning in my email, that Calif, is considering taxing those that have moved out of state.

Jersey Prophet

Don’t pay it! What can they do – come after you with Newsome’s goons?

NJ tried to do that to us with a departure tax when we left for FL. I told them where to stick it!

truth_Seeker!

Probably with Biden’s new 70,000 plus newly hired gun toting IRS agents!

Danny S Phillips

that’s 87,000 new armed agents.

Magik

THAT was cancelled .

John Warren

But don’t forget, The IRS, can move money around within their budget. They will do this. But we’ll never know they are doing it.

bob woods

I LOVE YOUR REPLY

vnvet

While you didn’t, I wonder just how many did pay??

Sandra Smith

So are several other blue states.

vnvet

I lived in California for 55+ years before I moved. So, nothing that California does or says would surprise me in the least. IMHO, the public pays dearly just to live there.

Magik

Wouldn’t it be easier to move Newsom ?

Tina Groat

Michigan didn’t make the list as we already have some of the highest gas taxes and our governor wants to raise them.

rottenrollin

Should have dumped that miscreant.

PatrioTEA

Hard to do that with the cheating element.

vnvet

WOW, and I thought that California still, held the #1 spot?

Patricia Overbey

I just googled who has the highest tax’s on gas PA 57.6 Calif 51.1 Wash 49.4 NJ 42.1 Illinois 39.2 Don’t shoot the mesenger

Cornflakes

In Illinois, only the leftist elites make the decisions. The governor is the worst in the country. But he’s a Chicago billionaire, and all the Chicago elites keep him in place.

John Warren

Ready, aim ………………..

Patricia Overbey

Pa has the highest gas tax in the country. so I have been told

Mike Wilson

And the first oil rig is in PA. They now have a McD’s drive thru going around it. Progress, I guess.

Mike

so getting better MPG is a curse. So driving my old sports car maybe a benefit. Where it needs to start are EV’s and hybrid’s then see where it ends up

vnvet

Don’t forget the elect cars, they are supposed to get great mileage, don’t they????

Patricia Overbey

that’s a joke at what happens to our failing electrical greed ? no more gas cars no more electric stoves

Magik

What are we to do with all those huge batteries once they are worn out ?

Magik

In an EV you are sitting on a 1200 pound battery . No thanks , I’ll keep the Corvette .

don

A major problem with the gas tax is that the taxes are used for a variety of non-highway projects, such as bicycle paths, roadside parks and other non-essential do-good projects.

rottenrollin

For most of which you hardly see ANY use…….

Sandra Smith

There has to be safety & connectivity for that. I’ve people that & they DO get used. Decent sidewalks that connect also provide not only pedestrian, but alternative mobility safe use (wheelchairs & scooters), kids walking to schools safely, etc. When they go nowhere, of course they don’t get used.

Sandra Smith

Some of those “non-essential ‘do good’ projects” aren’t just that. Bike paths & lanes are a perfect example. Provide SAFE infrastructure & more people will use it for transportation, this less crap in the air you’re breathing & healthier people too. It also cuts down on road repair & construction costs, when fewer vehicles are using them all the time. You might want to educate yourself a bit, before you show your ignorance.

Magik

You are correct and could have said it without the last sentence .

vnvet

Just like most things, the money is never used for what it was intended for..

don

I doubt that the gas tax will be reduced or eliminated when the new plan is put into effect.

vnvet

I agree.

MikeL

Maybe it’s time to turn in our transponders and pay tolls the old fashioned way

Last edited 1 year ago by MikeL
Patricia Overbey

Exactly, where did all the money go when they hardly have any toll takers all most all tolls are automated. Never hear how much money has been saved .How many people out of work.

joeupyoursc

hahahahahaha, wait till everyone drives an electric car!

vnvet

That is not going to happen. Alaska is already outlawing the elect car.

El-Tejas

This is ridiculous! How shall they monitor the miles driven?

Hat Bailey

Another excuse like income taxes to monitor and control people, the new electrics will most likely report directly to some agency how many miles are driven and where you went. In the future the controllers will be able to shut off your car remotely as well as your central bank digital currency if they don’t like what you are spending it on or what you say on social media.

vnvet

I already read where the law enforcement is working with the manufacturers to be able to shut down the new cars when and if they need to. That is why I will not be buying any new car,suv or truck any time soon. I want to be able to go when I want to go and not have someone else controlling what I do. Have a nice weekend where ever you may be.

Magik

Well , there is a Plan ” B ” .

RC Arrow

I agree 100%. Why cannot we unite and demand an alternate plan?

rottenrollin

They’ll hire 87000 mileage checkers.

PatrioTEA

You don’t want to know.

Siekierski

Simple… Place a chip in our arm like a vaccine which will record the number of miles we drive and the miles we walk. Makes you really wonder what was in the Covid-19 vaccine we were forced to take.

vnvet

Sorry, but I refused any and all shots for the next 2-3 years and even flu shots (because I do not trust what may be in the flu shots), and wait and see just how it affects other people before I even think about getting one. The last (supposed to be) flu shot I got 2-3 years ago, the pain from the needle and the shot lasted 4 months and I told my wife no more shots. Have a nice day.

Midnite Rider

They are putting the MRNA in all vaccines now.

Sandra Smith

That will increase road maintenance programs significantly; the weight factor…

Patricia Overbey

Very easy when you register your car every year you have to put down the mileage BINGO this is what you owe,

Eric

They already do. I have to report to my insurance company how many miles I drive each year.

Cornflakes

With a transponder that you pay for.

RangerEDGE5

Sin tax. Unless they are doing it.

Esther

Why is Florida on this list, and can DeSantis get them off, or would he?

Ima Enyurphase

Pay with LEAD ! Or stop paying altogether.

bob woods

I AGREE LEAD IS THE BEST SOLUTION TO STOP THIS DICTATORSHIP—-WE LOVE FREEDOM

Patricia Overbey

plus the ethanol [which % keeps being increased] ruins all your small engine equipment. I can not tell you how many thing we have tried to get repaired & are told the ethanol ruined the engine even with proper maintenance Throw it out bye new one. Electric is not good as we have over an acre of property you can not have electric cords all over the place not to say what that does to your ELECTRIC BILL

Fred Doe

I already pay for road upkeep through gasoline taxes. We need another Boston Tea Party, but this time let’s dump politicians into the harbor.

Patricia Overbey

sign me up

Magik

What are we going to do with the ones who can swim ?

Fred Doe

I’ve had just about enough.

Tim Kuehl

Gas taxes are also decreasing because of the increased efficiency of cars, hybrid cars and electric cars that don’t pay anything at all in gasoline taxes. And you can bet they won’t eliminate gasoline taxes when they add the mileage taxes. I say only put mileage taxes on electric, hybrid and cars that average over 30mpg.

NightWisp

Under NESARA these is to be only the 14% National sales tax and the states gets a part of it in lieu of all other taxes they had. Too bad so sad.

Nicholas

EV drivers should not be surprised by this local Governments move.

William Anderson

We need a tax revolt in this country. Seriously. We pay federal, state & city income tases. We pay property taxes for the right to live in our homes. We pay sales taxes on everything, including gas that we use to drive on the roads. On top of it all on some roads we pay tolls, which is nothing but a tax on driving. No more taxes without repealing existing taxes!!!

Patricia Overbey

Remember he said he was going to raise tax’s & so he is. Don’t blame me I did not vote for BIDEN

Grayfox41

If the FED stops printing money and Washington has to stop disbursing cash to select congressional districts because of debt limits, some states will be in financial trouble because they cannot print money or have deficit budgets.

Bud

We already have the tax, it’s on the gas we use, it would be a double tax.

Patricia Overbey

Without representation.???

VinnieA

If you listen to the Beatles Song “Tax Man” recorded back in 60s it sounded like a Prophecy of things to come! Once Upon a Time, We had a Revolution and dumped some bags of TEA into the Harbor in protest of a New British Tax! Well History does Repeat Itself but this time we need through these Politicians into the Harbor!

CPOBill

Always looking for new ways to stick it in our bidens!

Bob

What % of the TAX on Gas ⛽️ is already a milage TAX

Bud

We already pay tax per mile when we buy gas;, it’s included in the price of gas.

Bud

It’s long past the time that we start reducing the size of government.

FedUpTickedOff

all part of the “Cloward and Piven Strategy” which is to destroy the country through bankrupting it

Robert Vincent Jablonski

This site won’t post my responses!!!!!!!!!

Slinky

That is because you are Polish. LOL

American

Citizens are going to revolt if governments keep this up. We are tired of mandates and attempts at controlling us. This is a free country and we want to keep it that way. Vote every last one of these people out and replace them with conservative red-blooded Americans!

Robert Vincent Jablonski

YESSSSSSSSSSS American I agree NAVY VETERAN!!!!!

Old D

If Government would quit giving tax dollars away and fire 90% of Government do noting employees there would be no need for taxes!

Tired of Biden

If they would STOP paying all the illegals and sending money to these countries that hate us. I wonder how much that actually comes out to?

Bren

Refuse to pay it. They get enough of our money as it is now.

Dennis

I guess those free spending states need to look in the mirror or just confiscate your money and whatever the state wants – these people need to be fired!

Ken

Why tax those with fuel efficent cars? I thought that was what they wanted?

Maybe they should be putting this mileage tax on the electric vehicles since they do not use gas yet they are using the roads the gas-powered cars are paying for.

Matt

Congress and Senate should receive whatever the “AVERAGE” yearly salary is for that year.
If it’s $45k or $60k, that’s what they should get. And absolutely no exclusions from ANY of the laws that every other citizen must abide by.

john

John Kerry said recently that if people don’t want o go with Climate Control that they will be taxed, Biden ‘donated” a lot of money to Climate Control that we have to pay back via taxes. They are watching our bank accounts for any deposit or withdrawal of $600.00 or more, Biden also has given billions of dollars to Ukraine and sold off our national oil reserves to China. Christmas is early this year and Biden is the gift that keeps on taking.

J.Fetter

I think its terrible to try to tax us on everything. Our kids growing up aren’t going to have anything to look forward to in their future. I agree if the Government would quit letting people from all over the world and giving them money, food, medical and transpertationa all over the states. Soon we, the Americans, won’t have anything. Quit spending so much money and get people’s opinions about all of this. Politicians make too much money too for what they do. The Senate and House can cut costs too.

Duvall

Time for a recall for those states

Danny Clark

If you live in those states, start complaining to your congressman and Senators. If you live there start vacationing out of your State to a State who is not taxing you to drive. If you do not live in those States spend your money elsewhere. I live in Arkansas, I don’t have to go to Tennessee, or any other State that going to tax me to drive. If they did that in Arkansas you might as well increase the unemployment because even though we have cities most people here have to commute distances to work, and mss transit systems to commute people here just would not be feasible, besides what it would do to farmers and their help. Y’all city dwellers would have to get ready to starve and or see groceries really go sky high.

Don Rozino

If our elections weren’t rigged, we’d vote these POS’ out of office.

RSM4

Sadly, but predictably, some EV owners still believe they will not be taxed for road use because they are “fighting climate change.”

billi

After reading these 128 comments there’s still no solution for all the lying and criminology. A huge waste of time…….

Bob Russell

I no longer accept the federal government having any authority over me!!!!! It is time to abolish the corrupt federal government!!!!!!!!!!

Cheryl

He’ll no!!!!! My job is driving everywhere!!!

Nicholas

We warned EV drivers Government would come up with ways to offset Biden’s loss of oil lease income and gas taxes. Had enough if Democrats YET? Vote this time with ID.

Jim West

A mileage tax is a heavy tax on people that have a long commute to work. Most people don’t have a large choice over where they work or where they live. A heavy tax on people with a long commite, when they have no choice, is not fair to those people, and taxes them more heavily than everyone else.

Bob

Reduce government, fire them and make government as small as a dot in every state, not limited to the federal government and keep it that way no more career politicians!

This will reduce the taxation 80% or better.

It is the cost of government that is raising taxes and inflation.

Dan F.

BTW….look for another tax on electric vehicles……they don’t burn gasoline or diesel, so they don’t pay the 18.4 cents per gallon fed tax PLUS the state fuel tax. Or maybe we will be back to driving on dirt roads !

Tim Kuehl

Other than license fees, EVs pay nothing and hybrids pay very little to use our roads. Charge them a per mile tax and leave those of us who pay our way with gasoline taxes, alone. But the politicians won’t do that AND the will keep the gasoline tax. One solution I heard coming from Texas is to add a $200 surcharge to EV’s registrations. And if true, I’m sure a lot of whining is coming from those snobs who drive these cars that pollute immensely due to the need to dirty mine lithium and cobalt to fuel their cars only to fill landfills with their non recyclable batteries.
